Congratulation You have just been hired as the new CIO of the Issues-R-Us organization. You are excited about the opportunity but you also realize that there is much to be accomplished in order to get this company back in shape. Your CEO has welcomed you on board and has shown you to your office. He proceeds to sit you down and explain the many issues that are troubling him about the business. The conversation lasts about an hour. At the end of the meeting while the CEO has one foot out the door he turns and says, "Let me know your thoughts on how I can solve our many challenges. I want to know what we should do and the order in which we should do them in." You of course respond I will get right on it." As the door closes you lean back in your chair and wonder what you got yourself into. After a few minutes you realize that this is indeed a great opportunity to leverage what you know about technology and to really make a difference at this organization The first thing you do is a brain dump of everything your CEO spoke to you about. The following list is the issues that were mentioned during the conversation. Remember, they are in no specific order. The CEO was blurting them out as the conversation progressed. CEO Laundry List of Issues The Company website has been hacked into in the past There is a concern that employee access from home is a security risk Inconsistent power to the building, Data Center Unreliable Software development team's skillset is outdated Email system is antiquated No way to easily disseminate information to entire company No single source of truth with respect to our customer's data. We house this information in spreadsheets and MS Access databases throughout the different departments of the organization There is no consistency with respect to the way business processes are run within the organization. We have a problem with getting our products out on time. We always seem to be waiting for one of our suppliers to provide us with materials Once we achieve a "Single Source of Truth as it pertains to our data we will want to begin to leverage that data to make better decisions We lost some key people last year due to retirement and attrition. With that we lost a good deal of knowledge regarding how we operate. Each year we seem to be losing more and more of our market share. We need this trend to stop. What type of analysis should we perform to get a better handle on the factors that are affecting us? What will this analysis show us? Some of our customers have complained that we are spamming them. How do we stop this? We need to focus on retaining our current customers while coming up with inventive ways to acquire new ones. As a way to spotlight our best customers we were thinking of listing the top 100 customers on our website as a way of saying thank you. What do you think about that idea? DELL Our software maintenance contracts are killing us. What alternatives do we have to eliminate some of these costs? Our shipping costs are through the roof. We have too many returns and reships because of poor data quality issues on the orders we receive. Our customers also get very upset when they order something only to find out a week later that the item is out of stock, on back order, or simply no longer available. This is a major problem during the holidays. Management has no access to the data. I can't tell what's going on quick enough in order to correct it. Our phone system is unreliable and outdated. What technology can we use to provide a more reliable and feature rich solution? Also, I need to be able to get in touch with my key people when there is an issue. Right now I can email them or try to reach them at home, but that is not get me the immediate access that I need. Over the last 18 months our network has been infected with a number of viruses. What can be done to protect us from this? What type of rules/policies should we establish to better protect our data and our systems Our legal team has warned me that we must be able to produce all sorts of electronic documentation in the event legal action is brought against company. What can we do to ensure that we are protected and that we can produce the documentation when needed in a timely fashion? Our Customer support center costs too much money for us to keep it staffed 24x7x365. What alternatives do we have in that area that will not have a negative impact on the customer In the past we have seemed to be much unfocused in what projects we should take on in a given year. Often times the projects we select don't seem to be the ones that will benefit us the most. We need to come up with a way to align our project selection to the goals and objectives of the organization. How do we make that happen?
