Evidence-Based Practice and Evidence-Based Management Evidence-based practice (EBP) has become a standard in many fields of practice, including human services. While the field of medicine is credited with the earliest use of the concept, many fields, including mental health, child welfare, and education, are increasingly incorporating research findings into decision making. EBP can be defined as application of research and clinical evidence to decisions made about practice. Human service practitioners have a long history of making assessments based on the facts surrounding the case under consideration, so it is not a great stretch to tum to research and clinical findings for help in making decisions. The National Association of Social Workers states that "EBP is a process in which the practitioner combines well-researched interventions with clinical experience, ethics, client preferences, and culture to guide and inform the delivery of treatments and services" (NASW, 2009). making. Based on these same concepts and assumptions, evidence-based decision making has become an expectation for managers as well. Managers have two responsibilities here: (1) to facilitate in every way possible the accessing of sound research and evaluation data for use in decision making and (2) aggregating data wherever possible to document both program successes and needs for improvement. Data-based decision making can be incorporated into many areas of organizational life if managers are alert to its potential, and are willing to share information with staff in the interest of problem solving. A more detailed discussion of exactly what data are needed for sound evidence-based management will be coverec in Chapter 10
