West Marion Elementary School serves 381 students in the grades of Pre-K to 5th grade. In those grades, West Marion Elementary School placed in the bottom 50% of all schools in North Carolina for overall test scores. Math proficiency and reading proficiency were both in the bottom 50% for the 2020-2021 school year.

Target population:

The target population is the 3rd grade class at West Marion Elementary School. That is the grade level where a noticeable decrease in test scores occur. The school is 76% white, 16% Hispanic, and 5% black. The demographic that is having the most trouble is the white students.

Why is this a problem?

With the students having such a low proficiency in reading and math test scores, it is causing problems when the students just get passed on to the grades above. The percentage of students achieving proficiency in math is 20-24%, with the average in North Carolina being 42% (West Marion Elementary School (2023 ranking) - Marion, NC)

Impact in your school community?

The impact in the schools is that the students are having dramatically lower overall test scores than their peers in North Carolina.
