When membersjoin the gym, they pay a fee for a certain lengthof time. Most memberships are for one year, butmemberships as short as two months are available.Throughout the year, the gym offers a variety of discountson their regular membership prices (e.g., twomemberships for the price of one for Valentine'sday). It is common for members to pay differentamounts for the same length of membership. Thegym wants to mail out reminder letters to membersasking them to renew their memberships one monthbefore their memberships expire. Some membershave become angry when asked to renew at a muchhigher rate than their original membership contract,so the club wants to track the prices paid so that themanager can override the regular prices with specialprices when members are asked to renew. The systemmust track these new prices so that renewals can beprocessed accurately. One of the problems in theindustry is the high turnover rate of members.Although some members remain active for manyyears, about half of the members do not renew theirmemberships. This is a major problem, because thegym spends a lot in advertising to attract each newmember. The manager wants the system to track eachtime a member comes into the gym. The system willthen identify the heavy users and generate a report sothe manager can ask them to renew their memberships early, perhaps offering them a reduced rate forearly renewal. Likewise, the system should identifymembers who have not visited the gym in more thana month, so the manager can call them and attempt tore-interest them in the gym.
