When she was 17 years of age and in first year of her Journalism degree at University, Wendy entered into a contract with a well-known newspaper company as a cadet reporter. Under the contract the company agreed to pay her university fees and after completion of the degree a position on their staff. The company agreed that they would give her training during the University Christmas vacation periods and that she would be given an allowance during this training. Wendy agreed that she would work for the company for three years after completion of her degree and if she resigned before that time, or that she married within that period of time, she would pay to the company $1,000. Wendy was concerned about some of the terms but the recruiters from the company were very persuasive that she felt she couldn't say no. One year after graduation Wendy married and the company is claiming $1,000 from her. Does Wendy have any grounds for refusing to pay? Give full legal reasons for your answer.
