When Silence Means Yes
With the increasing cost of fuel these days, many people have resorted to buying motorcycles as their private mode of transport instead of four-wheel vehicles. Motorcycles are also great ways to move even in traffic situations, which is also a time-saver in going from one place to another. Demand for the product in the country has been growing at an average of 15% per month in the current year. And so are sales. Honsaki, a local motorcycle manufacturer and distributor, forecasted demand for the last quarter of the current year to be about 50,000 units and the company is looking to produce at least 55,000 units to meet the demand with 10% allowance for forecast error. As a country branch of a Japanese-headquartered company, Honsaki is a stickler for quality and complies with all rules and regulations governing its business. It has Mr. Saki Yamamoto serving as country manager for the last five years. Ernesto Ramirez is the production manager in Honsaki's plant in Batangas. Three months before the start of the last quarter, he noticed that at the pace of the current motorcycle production, they will fall short of production by at least 5,000 units. He decided to meet the people of the Production Design department to find a way to speed up production. One of the things he noticed that takes a bit of time during the production process is the processing and installation of ceramic substrate materials being placed at the exhaust system of the motorcycle to reduce emission. If they do away with the installation of the material, the department shall be able to meet the production target two weeks before the start of the last quarter. Since it is an internal design feature of the motorcycle that they will produce, the production manager believes that the quality, aesthetics, and the overall appearance of the motorcycle will not be compromised and that only one fourth of the production target will miss such feature. James Tano, the design engineer and the head of the production design department, does not agree with the recommendation so he tendered his resignation to the production manager, who accepted it on the spot before copying the Human Resources Department The two production design staff, Marlon and Albert, the extrovert junior engineers that they are, do not want to lose their jobs over the matter and would rather work on the instruction of the production manager than oppose it.
