When we consider the skills and abilities that we can offer an employer, it is important to let theemployer know where you excel, what energizes you and allows you to feel accomplished. This is where highlighting your transferable skills is so important! It could involve creating new ways to display products at a store; having someone ask you for assistance and seeing their positive reaction when you help them; preparing a delicious meal; or coming up with a better way to organize health records. These skills will be reflected both on your resume and cover letter, and employers will be looking for them to align with the job description/posting where possible.
Think about times when you have gotten positive feedback at current or previous jobs (or volunteer work, clubs, sports, parenting).
- What skills did you use in these situations? (Think about how you would describe them on a resume or cover letter).
- Make sure to tell us about at least two skills and where you developed them.
- How might these skills apply to your future career, even if your career is very different than your current position? Consider these examples and come up with some of your own.
- For example, if you work in a restaurant, and are describing customer service abilities, you could say "Communicated effectively with diverse patrons and successfully resolved complaints to their satisfaction". How this could apply to the health or management fields?
- Let's say you worked as a cashier at McDonald's. A transferable skill could be "Accurately calculated customer bills, made the change and maintained an accurate cash drawer". If your future goal is to be a bank manager, can you see the applicability?
