When we were addressing parenting strategies, I divided these into a framework I called PEPP-y. This framework distinguishes punishment, extinction, prevention, and promotion. Imagine you have a fifth grade daughter who has begun saying things that are borderline racist, picking this up from the peer group and the influence of contemporary influence of white nationalists politicians on popular culture. This bothers you greatly. After consulting was some of the parents in your daughter's small peer group you find they all share your concern by each parent has decided to take a different approach to the problem. One parent has decided to approach the issue through punishment, another through extinction, and another by using prevention.

Describe how a parent who's using punishment might approach this problem in their child.

Next describe how a parent who is using extinction might approach this problem in their child.

Third, describe how a parent who is using prevention might approach this problem.

Your descriptions of the various parents above should make it very clear that you understand the distinctions among their approaches.

Finally describe which approach if any you would adopt. There is no right answer to this question for you or the other parents. Therefore the thoroughness and compellingness of your logic and description should make it clear that you understand the pros and cons of each approach. When considering your own selection be sure to consider how the coerciveness of your selection could influence your child's attributions for their behavior and what factor that might what role that could play and their willingness to avoid this behavior in the future even when you are not around.
