Where do you use confidence intervals?

Confidence intervals are invaluable in the world of research....we actually use them in everyday life as well!

For example, at the end of the season I purchase new winter jackets for my boys. I need to make an educated guess as to the size I need to buy. The current year's size is my minimum value and the maximum value is two sizes bigger. My educated guess is that their true size in one year will be somewhere in the middle. To clarify, when shopping for my 9 year old (current coat is a size 8/10), I bought him a size 14/16. My guess is that he'll be a 12, but we've got some extra space just in case.
