How Does Your Personality Match Up With Your Career? Career counselors often use occupational attitude inventories to determine the best matches between an individual's abilities and personality and possible career choices. Many of these tests are based on researcher John Holland's six vocational personalities and work environments. 0 Realistic personality: Values practical and mechanical experiences such as operating machines or farming. Does not enjoy social interaction and would not enjoy teaching. Possible careers include firefighting, electrical work, or carpentry. Opportunities are limited in the field of kinesiology. 0 Investigative personality: Skilled at understanding and analyzing science and math problems. Not usually leaders or salespersons; more comfortable in labo- ratory environments. Those who pursue careers in kinesiology as researchers in exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, or sport sociology might have investigative personalities. 0 Artistic personality: Enjoys creative activities such as art, drama, crafts, dance, music, or creative writing. Best suited to work as writer, actor, artist, graphic designer, musician, or dancer. 0 Social personality: Enjoys helping people; values friendliness and trustworthiness in others. Tends to excel in careers such as nursing, counseling, physical therapy, and medicine. Socially-oriented individuals often pursue careers in athletic train~ ing and sport medicine. '- Enterprising personality: Ambitious, energetic, and sociable. Tends to be a self- starter who enjoys being in charge. Less interested in analyzing or conducting scientific studies than in getting something practical accomplished. Often pursues a career in business or politics. Managers of fitness facilities, coaches, and school principals often have enterprising personalities. 0 Conventional personality: Likes to work with numbers, machines, facts, and records. Prefers highly structured, orderly work that follows a set plan. Often is a bookkeeper, bank teller, or clerk. Most careers in kinesiology are not compatible with this type. Which personality type do you think best describes you? What careers in kinesiology do you believe your personality best matches?
