Why anyone would bother with containers $($with their sharing of a single host operating system and lack of total isolation from the server from which they are attached to$)$ when Virtual Machines don't have those limitations$.$

Containers are lightweight. This means that they are easy to start and stop whereas virtual machines might take minutes to start up$,$ containers take seconds.

Containers have a longer history of use.

Virtual Machines are proprietary.

Containers only run in UNIX or Linux environments which means they are inherently superior.
