Why did the constitution makers accept creation of a strong executive in light of their distaste for monarchy?

They did not believe the presidency would be a strong executive

Many feared anarchy without a powerful figurehead.

Fear of radical democracy

Belief that Washington would be the first president and establish precedents deserving of trust

They already had a strong executive under the Articles of Confederation
