Why is communication so important in managing projects? Why are we, generally speaking, not great at communicating? What is your biggest weakness in terms of communication? In 200 words please help me reply further to the discussion response posted below...thank you! Clear communication is essential in project management. Any project consists of many moving parts and individuals acting independently and collaboratively to facilitate and complete their assigned tasks to reach the overall goal of completing the project, as defined and on time. For this reason, clear communication is essential when managing a project because everybody must be on the same page and working towards the same goals. Because of this, a project manager must effectively and clearly communicate expectations, goals, deadlines, needs, and more to ensure that the project is completed successfully. I would argue that, in general, we aren't good communicators because most of us don't actively listen to what is being communicated. I believe that communication starts with listening. If two people are having a conversation but neither is really engaged in understanding what the other is saying, that conversation isn't going to be very productive. I'm sure we all can think of a time when we've witnessed two people talking and it's clear that they both want to control the conversation. Neither is listening to the other and it's easy to see that in their moments of silence they are only considering what they are going to say next, not what the other person is communicating to them. I know that I've witnesses plenty of these types of situations in the workplace. They are super unproductive and could be easily remedied with some active listening. In general, I consider myself a pretty good communicator. I attribute that to being an active listener and having "therapeutic communication" pounded into my head in nursing school. However, one weakness of mine is that sometimes I listen too much. I try to be considerate of what people are communicating to me, but sometimes that gets taken advantage of. I sometimes find myself in situations where people are talking at me, not with me. Something I could probably do to remedy this issue is to work on my assertive communication skills.
