Male koalas bellow during the breeding season, but do females pay attention? Charlton et al. (2012) measured responses of estrous female koalas to playbacks of bellows that had been modified on the computer to simulate male callers of different body size. Females were placed one at a time into an enclosure while loudspeakers played bellows simulating a larger male on one side (randomly chosen) and a smaller male on the other side. Male bellows were played repeatedly, alternating between sides, over 10 minutes. Females often turned to look in the direction of a loudspeaker (invisible to her) during a trial. The observations show the preference of each of 14 females for the simulated sound of the "larger" male. Preference was calculated as the number of looks toward the larger-male side minus the number of looks to the smaller-male side. Preference is positive if a female looked most often toward the larger male, and it is negative if she looked most often in the direction of the smaller male. The data are below, and illustrated via a histogram: 6 -6 2 13 6 2 -6 2 2 7 5 3 9 4 Histogram of Female Koala Preferences 5 Frequency 2 -10 10 15 male sound It is of interest to investigate whether female koalas pay attention to body size cues in simulated male sounds. (a) In performing a hypothesis test here, what would you take as the null hypothesis? O A. The sample of female koalas show a preference to body size cues in their responses to simulated male sounds. OB. The sample of female koalas show no preference to body size cues in their responses to simulated male sounds. O C. On average, female koalas show a preference to body size cues in their responses to simulated male sounds. OD. On average, female koalas do not respond to simulated male sounds. O E. On average, female koalas show no preference to body size cues in their responses to simulated male sounds.[h] In conducting the hypothesis test here. would the researchers take a one--sided or twosided alternative hypothesis? 0A. Cher-sided 0 B. It does not matter Q) G. Two-aided {c} Perform your test. Provide the test statistic to a decimal places. 0.00 [d] Would you reject or not reject your null hypothesis at the 5% significance level?I 0A. Not reject @s. Hale-ct
