Brief Introduction to This Week's Case Study Workers at THE TENDER TOUCH are becoming demotivated, their hourly wage stayed the same for the past 2 years. They earn $18 an hour. The employee turnover, started to pick up, and Linda must do something about it before it is too late. This Week's Detailed Case Study Information THE TENDER TOUCH company employee performance stayed the same over the past couple years. While sales were climbing the revenue per worker didn't change on yearly basis. Linda tried different strategies to improve the revenue per worker, but nothing works out, so she decided to freeze any wage increases until the employees increase sales per worker. She clearly communicated this strategy to his employees, who were okay with it. Time passed, and the sales figure improved, but the revenue per worker stayed the same. Linda, was okay with it, since she wasn't changing the pay structure, and nobody complained about it. So, she thought that his strategy is working. One day she was carrying out business as usual, when the HR manager passed by her and told her the bad news. Marsha (the HR manager), explained that employee turnover is increasing, which means that revenues per employee will decrease in the near future. Marsha asked Linda to do something about it. Linda was thinking about this problem over and over again, and she realized that something must be changed. She initially thought about decreasing the pay and hiring new staff, but she realized that this will require a substantial investment in training, also it will lead to lower employee satisfaction. The other option was to call a meeting and clearly communicate the strategy of increasing sales. This is a good strategy, but it could lead to an increase in turnover, if employees feel pressured to increase sales. Finally, she thought about giving his employees a raise of 2% and asking them to work harder to improve sales. In his opinion, this strategy made sense, since it won't have a significant effect on the bottom line, and at the same time it will motivate workers. Linda decided to announce this on Monday morning to make sure everybody is excited about the raise. Tammy, a part-time student also works at THE TENDER TOUCH she works only 10 hours a week. She's been working with THE TENDER TOUCH for the past two years. The reason why she chooses THE TENDER TOUCH as her primary part-time employer, is due to the flexibility in scheduling her hours. She also gets some time off during her mid-term exams, and finals. On Monday, during the meeting she realized that she will receive a raise, she did the math in her head, and figured out that she'll earn around $15 extra per month. She thought, this amount is insignificant, especially after I deduct taxes, CPP, and EI from it. Therefore, it did not make her happy neither did it make her sad, she was neutral. She did not tell any of her friends about the raise, she did not feel anything; it was a normal day for her. Her reaction was neutral. A week after the wage raise announcement Linda sat in his office, and though about "Perception" a concept that she knew from "Organizational Behavior". She decided to analyze the situation by applying the factors "Perception" to this problem, and figuring out a policy, which could be followed at THE TENDER TOUCH in order to maximize workers satisfaction.
