Winter Park Hotel Donna Shader, manager of the Winter Park Hotel, is considering how to restructure the front desk to reach an optimum level of staff efficiency and guest service. At present, the hotel has five clerks on duty, each with a separate waiting line. Observation of arrivals during this period shows that an average of 80 guests arrive each hour (although there is no upward limit on the number that could arrive at any given time). It takes an average of 3 minutes for the front-desk clerk to register each guest. Ms. Shader is considering two plans for improving the guest service by reducing the length of time that guests spend waiting in line: First (Option I), implement a single-line system. All guests could form a single waiting line to be served by whichever of five clerks became available. This option would require sufficient lobby space for what could be a substantial queue. Second, the use of an automatic teller machine (ATM) for check-ins is the alternative proposal. This ATM would provide about the same service rate as would a clerk. Because initial use of this technology might be minimal, Shader estimates that 30% of customers, primarily frequent guests, would be willing to use the machines. Customers in the ATM are expected to take less time in the system because they are more technical oriented customers and have a ready profile. ATM customers will spend 90 seconds in the check in process. Ms. Shader would set up a single queue for customers who prefer human check-in clerks. This line would be served by 4 clerks. It takes an average of 3 minutes for the front-desk clerk to register each guest. You are asked to address the following questions: A. Provide an analysis of the existing system configuration (five clerks with 5 lines) by computing the following system performance: (1) Average number in the queue (Lq), (2) Average number in the system (L), (3) Average time in the queue (Wq), (4) Average time in the system (Ws). B. Provide an analysis of option I system configuration (five clerks with single line) by computing the following system performance: (1) Average number in the queue (Lq), (2) Average number in the system (L), (3) Average time in the queue (Wq), (4) Average time in the system (Ws). C. Provide an analysis of option II system configuration (ATM with single line and clerks with single line) by computing the following system performance: (1) Average number in the queue (Lq), (2) Average number in the system (L) D. Provide a comparative table showing the three options with the respective number of people in the system and in the line (L, and Lq). Which option has the best system performance from a service level perspective? E. Bonus Question: The existing configuration (five clerks with 5 lines) and option I (five clerks with single line) appear to be the same and you would expect to have similar or comparative performance. In simple words, why you would think that there is a large difference in the service performance. This is an Individual Work; you can however work in groups and submit individual personalized work.
