With an online platform, the instructor has to ensure that they are active in order to engage the students and instructors need to take initiative with regard to communication, avenues to connect with students, feedback, etc. as it's a very different learning environment that lacks the face to face interactions.

Many schools automatically set up expectations and requirements for their faculty/instructors to ensure there is a set level of activity, etc. by them; however, there still remains a variation, as you would find even in a traditional learning setting. There's always one teacher who's more engaging and active with their class while there's another who dryly reads from their power point or notecards to where you try not to fall asleep in class.
