The intent of this course is to examine how information technology is used to attain a competitive advantage. This term paper gives your group an opportunity to investigate how a particular organization has used information technology to attain the sought- after advantage. Select a real-world organization that used IT to gain this advantage and prepare a critique of how the organization used IT to its advantage. This critique may describe a successful implementation of IT to solve a business problem (for example, installing a knowledge management system that drastically reduced the customer service problems) or may describe a poorly implemented IT solution (i.e., an ERP system that ran over budget and did not provide the efficiencies that were promised.) The group also has the option to describe an IT solution that may address an existing business problem or opportunity. For example, a group member may have some sound recommendations for an IT solution that will address a problem that exists at his or her workplace - too much inventory is ordered and sits around too long before used in production or customers wait too long before receiving a simple status check. The choice is up to the group. The following areas should be covered in your report: Organization Description: This description should include information about the organization such as its size (number of employees), annual revenues, the type of business it's in, its position within the market (i.e., market leader). Include any other information that defines the organization. Opportunity: Describe an opportunity within the organization that could be realized using IT. For example, an organization may need improved customer service, may need to eliminate inaccurate inventory problems, or may simply need to improve communication among the numerous global business units. Select an opportunity of significant magnitude for the organization - any critical path process would be appropriate. Providing an electronic means for salespersons to enter their expenses would not be considered appropriate even though the salespeople may consider this a worthwhile opportunity. Once an opportunity has been identified the group can either: 1) discuss what a particular organization HAS DONE to realize that opportunity (how Wal-Mart used RFID technology to streamline their supply chain management) OR 2) discuss what a particular organization CAN DO to realize that opportunity. (recommend an IT solution that will help CSU students find available parking places on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays).
