WK6 Discussion Board Video Instructions WATCH: Libby, Montana: An Asbestos Legacy Back as far as 1919 companies starting pulling vermiculite out of mines in the town of Libby. It was used in many construction materials such as insulation for homes. For decades workers and residents were exposed to asbestos dust. When W.R. Grace and Company took over in 1963 they knew vermuculite was contaminated with asbestos and that it caused many health complications. They chose to continue mining and not warn anyone. It's estimated that 400 Libby residents have died and approximately 3,000 more are suffering from illnesses related to this exposure. The mine closed in 1990 but the issues continued for the town.
