It was used in many construction materials such as insulation for homes. For decades workers and residents were exposed to asbestos dust. When W.R. Grace and Company took over in 1963 they knew vermuculite was contaminated with asbestos and that it caused many health complications. They chose to continue mining and not warn anyone. It's estimated that 400 Libby residents have died and approximately 3,000 more are suffering from illnesses related to this exposure. The mine closed in 1990 but the issues continued for the town.
