Working-class New York has changed dramatically over the past few decades. The city has become increasingly expensive, and many working-class residents have been priced out of their neighborhoods. In addition, the city has become increasingly segregated, with many affluent residents living in exclusive enclaves and poor residents concentrated in specific neighborhoods. As a result, working-class New Yorkers have become increasingly isolated from the rest of the city. The author concludes that the shrinking of union power in New York and the financial challenges faced by middle-and lower-income New Yorkers today are largely due to the city's increasing segregation and inequality
