Workplace Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is the responsibility of all hospitality leaders. Human Resources typically leads the charge, but every department should strive to value the uniqueness in their team. One way of ensuring inclusivity, innovation and open-mindedness is to create cultural day and have cultural calendars for the departments and organization as a whole. Values gained are employee retention, and higher employee engagement. When staff feels more like a team because they know each other better AND when they feel the company values them as a whole person, their loyalty increases. Designing and executing a cultural day or cultural activity for the staff is a leadership responsibility that requires practice.

Description:Cultural Sharing and Educating

Create a presentation or art work of your background as you would share at a convention table or on a wall with your team at work for cultural day. Here are some of the questions you may want to answer. On the board or deck answer questions like:

• Importance of diversity in the workplace; how diversity and cultural respect enhances recruitment and retention.
• Home Country / Region
• What is your home country and tell us about it? Is it a dessert, mountainous, beach?
• Which do you identify the most: your country, region, faith?
• What is your country known for?
• Your family?
• Does it have significance?
• Are you named after someone? Is someone named after you?
• How would you describe your culture?
• Create and Share what is unique to your culture that others should know?
• Art work share some images of artwork (paintings, sculptures, etc.), that are unique to your homeland or culture; or that depict your home.
• Food what are the most common or popular ethnic foods?
• Holidays what are the key holidays that are celebrated, and how would you celebrate them in the workplace?
