Would aspirin get a passing grade from the FDA today? Aspirin has been a trusted medicine since 1899, but some claim it might never have seen the light of day if it had to meet the current FDA requirements for a new drug, in some applications. Billions of doses of this simple drug have helped patients worldwide to treat everything from heart attacks to headaches. Yet, in the words of one researcher, "...if you were somehow able to change history so that aspirin had never been discovered until this year, I can guarantee you that it would have died in the lab. No modern drug development organization would touch it." Even though a few experts claim that FDA guidelines would discourage drug companies from investigating aspirin if it were a new drug today, it continues to be a drug of choice by many doctors today, and is often safer than many drugs that have attempted to replace it.

In this lab, you will do the following. Create unbiased sampling statistics to estimate the unknown population parameters for the mean and standard deviation of data. Compute z-scores for specific values. Use the z-score to determine probabilities of seeing certain values in the population that is assumed to be normally distributed. Plot the data to determine whether the data actually appears to come from a population that is normally distributed. Examine the normality of the data using the empirical rule.

1. Plot and upload (may be copy and paste) a histogram of the data.

>Make sure to explain the skewness.
