The research proposal must comply to Australian Guide to Legal Citation 4 (AGLC4) guideline of referencing/footnotes in the format of:

ABSTRACT (150 words)

  • This section should provide the reader with a broad overview of your research: what it is; why it should be undertaken; the rationale for the research; how it will be conducted; and its contribution to knowledge.
  • A well written abstract will be short (150 words).

AIMS OF THE PROPOSAL (500-700 words)

  • Describe the aims and background to your proposal. Briefly refer to earlier or related research on which your research will build.

State the overarching research question or legal contention and any sub-questions your research will seek to answer. What is the legal or socio-legal problem you are seeking to solve?

  • What are you trying to achieve? Your proposal should include what the central questions / aims /issues of your thesis are.

    • Puzzles
  • You should take the time to consider what exactly your thesis will answer or address and resolve and what is required to do this.
  • They should narrow and achievable.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH

  • Why is your research important?
  • Is there something different / unique / original about your research ?
    • Build on or adds to current knowledge in the area
    • New approach / method for dealing with something
    • It is timely given a recent case / event ?
    • Identifies an injustice or a confusion in law.
  • Will it have possible important practical application?
    • Social impacts, justice, clarity etc.

LITERATURE REVIEW (more than 10)

  • The purpose of the brief literature review is to demonstrate where your proposed research fits in with what is already known through existing literature about your field of research. It should achieve the following:
  • Analyse critically the major approaches in the research literature that you have identified, including theoretical traditions and key findings.

TIME MANAGEMENT PLAN (200 words)

  • This section - an account of your plan to submit the dissertation by the due date.
  • General objectives and approach
    • Evaluation of your study strengths and weaknesses, looming study bottlenecks
  • Milestones
    • Timetable the tasks and milestones
    • There a few ways to format this including as a table or a list.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

  • The proposal must comply with AGLC 4 throughout.
  • Include a bibliography but it will not be included in the word count.
