(BMI) or Kohl's Corporation (KSS)). See the resources for writing a business memo posted under LearnIt! There should be 4 paragraphs in the memo: 1. Purpose of the memo 2. Introduction to the company 3. Introduction to the competitor 4. Compare and contrast the company and its competitor 1. Purpose. In the first paragraph briefly state the purpose of the memo. At this stage the purpose is to introduce the company and its competitor for the following scenario: Your supervisor is getting ready to make an overview presentation about the financial condition of the company you are analyzing for your financial management project. The purpose of the presentation is to identify possible targets for improvement of significant ratios. 2. Introduce the Company. Tell a little about the company in your own words. You should include information such as the year the company was founded, headquarters location, number of locations, product lines, target market, and countries it manufactures or sells in. You may also include information from recent articles (within the last 3 months) that reflect on the company's progress or strategy (not required). Although financial statement analysis allows us to compare companies of different sizes, it is useful to have indicators of a company's relative size. Include the company's total assets, total revenue (be sure to indicate the unit of measure i.e. millions, billions). This paragraph should be a minimum of 5 sentences long and should include at least one source for your information. 3. Introduce the competitor. Include the same type of information in this paragraph that you used to introduce your company. Be sure to include company's total assets and total revenue. - For Badger Meter, Inc. (BMI) use Mueller Water Products (MWA) as the competitor. - For Kohl's (KSS) use Macy's (M) as the competitor 4. Compare and contrast your company and its competitor. What makes them similar? What makes them different? Include several items such as size of the company, product line, target market, number of locations and/or whether the company does business internationally or not. Required: - Proper memo format. See resources under LearnIt! - A minimum of four paragraphs in the memo. - Sources of information. There should be at least two sources in the memo, one for the company and one for its competitor. Use footnotes for citations. All direct quotes need to be in quotation marks. Even if you don't quote, if you provide information that is not common knowledge, refer to the source of the information and include a footnote citation. Second paragraph will introduce the company that you chose for your financial analysis project. Be sure to include citations for outside sources you have used. In a memo, you can use a footnote to reference your source. In Word, click on References, then Insert Footnote. This gives credit to the original source, builds the credibility of your memo and "failure to adequately cite your sources can get you into hot water with respect to plagiarism". 1 Current news may be included if desired. All financial information should include footnotes (or you may use MLA format if you prefer). Include similar information about the competitor and be sure to reference the sources you use. Finally, compare and contrast the two. What makes them similar? What makes them different?
