You are working for a Human Resources firm and are tasked with creating a high-level report for a prospective client, "Fitzgerald Canoes." Fitzgerald Canoes is a family-owned and operated business that has never had any sort of formal human resources policies. Jane, and her husband Jim Fitzgerald, have handled all human resources matters themselves. Their children Basil, Violet, and Jim Jr. work at the business and will be taking over all operations because Jane and Jim are retiring. The business is growing and there have been some challenges:

•    Some of the longer standing employees do not view the children as having any authority.
•    A new woodworking employee showed up for work wearing sandals as footwear.
•    Conversations on the shop floor are often not suitable for mixed company.
•    There is grumbling about pay discrepancies among employees doing the same work.
•    Too much material is being wasted whenever a new employee starts.
•    There are only a few employees that know how to properly build canoes.
•    The owners are constantly on high alert because of the hazards they observe.
•    Employees that should be up for promotion are going to the competitors for their career growth.
•    Only men have been hired for jobs in the Woodworking Shop.

Use the information about the challenges faced by Fitzgerald Canoes to help personalize your report.
Choose 4 of the 5 following topics:

Gather information on the topics by reviewing what you have learned in class and through your own research. Apply this knowledge to draft a summary report to help Fitzgerald Canoes understand the need for a more formal human resources program. Suggest some policies under the 4 topics you select and explain why those policies are important in assisting Fitzgerald Canoes in addressing existing and future human resource challenges.

Note: Since the topics "Compensation" and "Health and Safety" are not fully covered prior to the assignment due date, some working ahead is required.

After completing your research and writing about your 4 topics, you will then bring them together and write a summary introduction to form your report.

For example, if you chose compensation as one of your four topics, you might briefly address what is included in compensation. Are there health benefits? Paid sick days? How much, if any, paid vacation? Are employees eligible for a bonus? When? How much? On what basis are bonuses determined and awarded? There are many topics which you could cover, apart from these suggestions in compensation.
