The routine that accepts characters should not generate an interrupt when data is available, but merely wait for the character to appear in its buffer. In other words, the UART routine should spin in a loop until a key is pressed, after which it branches back to the main routine. Note that the UART window must have the focus in order to accept data from a keyboard (this is a Windows requirement), so be sure to click on the UART window first when testing your code
