Write an assignment in Twelve-hundred-word count using Rhetoric (practicing point of view). First, observe a place or space. you choose for me - it could be anything from the local coffee shop to a dorm room, factory, library, stadium, bathroom, parking lot, or forest glade. The place or space could be virtual - like Riften in Skyrim, or an online museum gallery, or even a library database (if you're up for a challenge). Observe everything I can about the place or space, every detail I can possibly notice (take your time, sit for a while with your notes), including your personal/emotional impressions.The people who come in, the amount of traffic, etc. Also, don't forget that she can "observe" with all my senses. In addition, to what the scene looks like, write down how it sounds, smells, feels (if there is a surface for you to touch), and even tastes, if that's relevant. (Even an online space can be observed in this way, mergedas it is, with the material space that you occupy to observe the virtual space.) I won't need to hand in these notes, but they are essential for the rest of the assignment.

Second, I will have to write two different single descriptions of my selected place. Each description will have a different purpose, chosen by me. Rather than just write one positive and one negative (too obvious!), instructor wants me to think more about whyI might be writing, and how my purpose would change my perspective, or to whom I might be writing (your audience). (Revisit Everyone's an Author, "Rhetorical Situation," 28-34), Since I will all have different places or spaces, she cannot give me precise options for purpose, but here are some general possibilities. Imagine that my description would be part of a larger argument - what I hand in for each section will sound like an excerpt from that argument.

• I am a reporter trying to reveal particular conditions to the general population.
• I am a reporter writing a special interest piece to give an "insider's view" of a place.
• I am a company representative writing about to what extent a place may or may not be a good investment (you choose the kind of company).
• I am a scientist (sociologist, environmental scientist, or whatever might be appropriate to your space) and writing an "objective" report on the place.
• I am an advertising executive, discussing to what extent the place would or would not be a good area to shoot my next commercial (choose an appropriate product).
• I am a teacher (I choose the grade level) considering whether to bring your students to the place for a field trip.
• I am a representative for the place (a manager, proprietor, builder, whatever is appropriate) running a promotional campaign.
• I am a dreamer, envisioning how the world might be different in characteristics of that space were more widely known or adopted.

Third, after each single description, I will have to write short reflection describing the "background" of the description - what "role" I was playing, what purpose I had in writing the description, and any other relevant information. I will also describe what strategies I used to make your description accurately reveal your perspective.

• State meaning or intentions directly.
• Select details that support my intended effect and omit those that do not.
• Choose words that frame the subject in a desired way or that have desired connotations.
• Use metaphors, similes, or analogies to create an intended effect and vary sentence structure to emphasize or de-emphasize ideas and details.

Also, don't forget the fundamental appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos. 

What authorial persona should I adopt to best (not exclusively) get my message across? 

What does my audience want? How could I appeal to my readers?

 How could I make your description seem logical, complete, or "natural?"
