Her article shows that 30-40% of college students participate in binge drinking which is considered more than four drinks on a regular basis or a BAH of .08% or more. This number has decreased by 42.3% since 1993. The likely hood of binge drinking significantly increases when there are events to attend such as frat parties, birthdays, case races or other social events that promote consuming large amounts of alcohol in one sitting. Her study showed that 54% of students between the ages of 18-24 admitted to binge drinking at least once within the past year Social factors that are impacted when people are around binge drinking culture is the social norm to what people consider to be a normal amount of drinking versus the perspective of someone who is not surrounded by drinking culture are going to have two significantly different perspectives. Social norms can impact how much people drink as well if you are constantly surrounded by binge drinking culture you are more than likely to consider 4-5 drinks normal for a weekend while if you surrounded by a normal drinking amount being 1-2 drinks on a night out you are going to have two very different perspectives which you both consider normal and acceptable.
