A retrospective associational study examined the medical utilization of homeless veterans receiving treatment in a Veterans Affairs health care system (LePage, Bradshaw, Cipher, & Hooshyar, 2014). A sample of veterans seen in the Veterans Affairs health care system in 2010 was evaluated for homelessness at any point during the year, as well as chronic medical and psychiatric diseases, and medical utilization. A subset of the data was analyzed. The independent variable was group: Homeless vs. Not Homeless, and the dependent variable was the number of visits to the emergency department in 2010. The null hypothesis is "There is no difference between homeless veterans and non-homeless veterans on the number of ED visits in 2010."
