The purpose was to try to increase efficiency but the performance pay/goal of increasing scans per hour backfired. Cashiers complained about the pressure it created and it often led to scanning errors such as failing to scan an item or scanning twice. Walmart in response modified its policy to place less emphasis on scans per hour and more emphasis on customer service and accuracy.
