You, a business major, serve as your universitys student government president. Jim, your friend who is an art history major, is beginning his second year as treasurer. Jim presents the first student government financial statement for the year to you, and notes that $3,000 is completely missing and unaccounted for. This represents about 30% of the associations budget for the year.
You ask Jim a number of questions about the missing money, but Jim says, I dont know what happened to the money. It might just be a simple math error. I need to collect more information, but Im working on it. I just dont know how long it will take to gather all of the information, and figure out what happened. It could take a whole semester.
You have known Jim for three years, and have always liked and respected him. Jim is a good student with a nearly 4.0 GPA who commits himself completely to everything he does, but who has had his share of difficulties in life. You have learned over the past few years that Jims father passed away suddenly when he was in 8th grade. Jim worked through most of high school and college at various minimum wage jobs to help his mother support the family. This past summer Jims car needed significant repairs, his brother needed emergency dental surgery, and his homes air conditioner had to be replaced after breaking during one of the hottest local summers ever. Jim also got a new job as a part-time curator at a local art museum that pays $11 per hour for twenty hours each week, and allows him to finish school on time in four years. After graduation, the job then converts into a full-time position for Jim.
Although you are happy for Jim, you are still concerned about the missing money and why Jim doesnt know what happened.
