Hello everyone, I hope everyone Is having a good week and learning lots. This week has us going over the project estimation process. The project estimation process I have chosen to go over form this week's reading is the "Affinity Grouping" Which is the process of reviewing all the task which needs to be completed to finish the project out and grouping them into smaller like groups based on how big the tasks is ranging from extra-small tasks all the way up to extra-large tasks and then giving each group points and adding all the points up to get a rough estimate of the time needed to complete not only the small tasks but the whole project. The pros to this would be quick understanding of the time it will take, easy to distribute workload based on teams' knowledge and understanding, easy to move things around when needed, and gives clear and quick information to the team as how things are going. The cons may be team members may argue where specific items are placed or items may be randomly moved without discussion from the team causing confusion, initial bad placement may through the estimate way off making the initial estimate a waste of time. If planned properly with good understanding this estimation practice may work but with the cons in place it takes good communicational and understanding among the team for it to work properly. A project I estimate poorly before is when working on vehicles and doing Maintenace such as doing a brake/change oil job which should take of taken 2 hours but ended up taking 3 due to not having the proper tool and doing one at a time versus doing both at the same time. When it comes to working on cars there always seems to be something that throw the estimate off such as wrong tools, bolts not coming out properly due to rust, etc. All of these can throw off the estimated time of completion by a lot if I have to stop what I'm doing to get a tool or figure out a different way of completing the task. I think using the "Affinity Grouping" where I could have put the project into different step and taking in account some error areas that could have slowed me down. This would have helped me think the process out better and given me a better estimate of how long it would take such as I could have drained the oil the same time, I started working on one side of the brakes versus doing the brakes and then moving onto the oil when there is a wait time for all the oil to drain properly. This method would have helped me a lot and I'm sure in the future I can implement one of these methods to help me get a better estimate.
