You are a Linux Systems Administrator in the Engineering department of Yoyo-Dyne Propulsion Systems. One day, the Vice President of Human Resources, John Endmall, comes to you with a question:
Were just about to upgrade all the computer in the HR department from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and from Office 2010 to Office 2016. Thats going to cost money plus, some of the PCs will need more memory. I heard we could switch to the latest version of something called Linux for free! You guys in Engineering run Linux, right? You are their Linux expert, so do you think this is a good idea?
The assignment is to write a memo to Mr. Endmall giving your thoughts on if he should migrate his non-technical department to the Linux operating system as their desktop operating system. This should be longer than the Help Desk reply, but no more than 2, maybe 3 pages.
The general format is your expert recommendation as to whether HR should or should not migrate to Linux. You should use facts as well as your own conclusions and opinions. Feel free to use whatever research material you want, in the real world you certainly could.
In specific, the recommendation itself should be very near the end of the memo and be in the form of a summary paragraph. Most of the memo should a presentation of facts and of your thoughts and opinions that build the case for your recommendation.
In the past, some students have had a hard time coming up with things to cover in their reply to Mr. Endmall. The below isnt a required topics list, and it most certainly isnt a limit on the topics can you cover! Its just some ideas to get you started if you need them.
While Linux is free, is migrating to Linux free?
The HR department has been using Microsoft Office for years and has a library of documents, spreadsheets, and power point presentations. How will they use these under Linux?
Will HR running Linux, while the other parts of Yoyo-Dyne are still running PCs (or Macs) create any compatibility issues with apps or with the LAN??
How will training the HR employees to use Linux and Linux Apps be handled?
