You are a new BCBA working for a therapeutic day school that serves individuals with disabilities from ages 5 through 21. Each classroom has 1 special education teacher, 1 behavior therapist (BT) and 4 paraprofessionals. The behavior therapist is responsible for collecting data, conducting behavior assessments and training staff on how to run behavior plans. You're assigned to an elementary-aged classroom of 10 students ages 11-13. You have experience with this age group, but not in a classroom setting. One of the students, Eddy, is engaging in high frequency yelling. Based on some of your observations and other ABC data, you hypothesize that the behavior is maintained by attention from staff members. You have the BT collect data on interresponse time (IRT; the time from one response to the next). The IRT data show that the yelling is occurring an average of every 35 seconds to 1 minute. You create an intervention package that includes noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) in the form of attention. You coach the BT on providing attention to Eddy every 30 seconds, regardless of yelling behavior. After you roll out this NCR plan to the BT and the classroom staff, the BT tells you that he collected the IRT data wrong, and the yelling is occurring less frequently than what he originally reported. When you observe the classroom, you see that the staff are completely ignoring Eddy and his yelling is continuing to occur at about the same average.
