You are a new corrections officer and have just completed your shift and are asking around for a ride because you need to pick up your car at the repair shop. A fellow officer offers to give you a ride since it is on his way home. While riding in the officer's private vehicle you notice a bundle of something on the back seat. The officer stops at a convenience store, leaving you in the car while he goes inside. As you look at it more closely you realize it is the same bundle cocaine two officers seized during a drug bust in the prison this week. When the officer gets back into the vehicle you ask why he has the drugs in his private vehicle. He laughs off your comment and tells you it is his and your "take" for the month. He states that it is half of what was seizedseveral nights ago during a cell search and that he was told to split it with you as your part of the take.He further explains that most of the officers at the prison have to find ways to supplement their income because of low pay. These valuable drugs would just get destroyed anyway. He lets you know in a subtle way that if you don't take it the rest of the officers will not be happy and will not trust you.You might end up hurt by some inmates some shift.

  • What action do you take?
  • What do you tell this officer?
  • What if they threaten your family?
  • What if people up the supervisory chain are involved?
