You are a new engineer for a Corn Syrup facility in Saskatchewan. It is required to apply acid hydrolysis to a 50% corn starch stream to create corn syrup. Then, several evaporation steps are applied to increase the syrup concentration to 85% (these compositions are set by external requirements and cannot be changed). For the acid hydrolysis, for each kilogram of corn starch that is added, 850 grams of sugar are created (glucose, maltose, and higher oligosaccharides) and 150 grams of waste are created. Your boss, who knows nothing about engineering, has made some assumptions and drawn out a block diagram, shown below. Your boss has assumed the following to make the process diagram shown below: The process will be able to handle the maximum feed of 50,000 kg/h The process will produce 35,000 kg/h of concentrated product Evaporator 1, 2, 3, and 4 will each run at a rate of 70% of its upstream unit (see diagram) Create a DOF table for the process drawn by your boss. Question 4 (Type C) (RLO 1.7C) Your boss wants to know if you can build the process he has drawn out. Specifically, your boss wants to know if his assumptions are good ones. Please write out your boss assumptions as a list and then clearly indicate which assumptions you would remove or which assumptions you would add. Then, please complete another Degree of Freedom Table using your new edited list of assumptions. Beneath your new Degree of Freedom Table, please use a list of short bullets to explain how you would solve for all unknown compositions and rates (i.e. in which order would you manually/sequentially solve the process). You do not need to solve the process.
