You are a psychotherapist. You have a client that is extremely shy. So shy in fact that during your first session with them, they don't make eye contact and barely speak. Consulting the DSM, you find they check all the boxes for a social anxiety disorder (e.g., blushing and sweating, racing heart, need to escape, and avoidance of social situations). Over a number of sessions, however, they begin to open up, and you further learn that they are most likely to exhibit these symptoms when interacting with an authority figure. With this scenario in mind, I'd like you to compare and contrast three different psychotherapies: psychoanalytic, cognitive, and behavioural. Specifically, answer the following questions. You might want to imagine that having diagnosed the client you now need to explain to them three different approaches you can take to treat their problem. First, describe in a general sense how each form of psychotherapy conceptualizes the source of the client's problem and what the aim of the psychotherapy should be. Second, describe how you would treat the client's social anxiety disorder using each approach. Specifically, for the psychoanalytic approach, illustrate a session with your client that uses the fundamental rule of psychoanalysis, free association, resistance and transference, insight and catharsis; for the cognitive approach, illustrate a session with your client that uses probing questions to reveal beliefs, test beliefs, and change beliefs to overcome catastrophizing and restructure their thinking; and for the behavioural approach, illustrate a session with your client that uses systematic desensitization. Third, after describing (as per above) how these sessions might go, the client asks you which form of psychotherapy you'd personally recommend not just for this particular problem but for getting their life together in general. Would it still be one of the above approaches or another? Client-centered? Logotherapy? A biomedical approach? An alternative approach? In other words, the client is asking you which form of therapy you personally find most appealing and/or effective for improving all around functioning. Explain.
