You are a well-reviewed mixed-media artist in the Boston, MA area. Your work has been very well received locally and you are gaining positive reviews with art critics regionally. While you have had several local art shows that you have sold pieces, a large art gallery, EXHIbition, with sites in New York City, Chicago and in San Francisco, is currently interested in showing your work. EXHIbition is currently trying to establish a European gallery in addition to their U.S. galleries. There are other larger galleries with multiple sites in the US and/or Europe who have mixed media artists. EXHIbition does not have any artists that produce artwork with the mixed media you do, and this is a market they would like to add to their portfolio. Your art is an expansion option for them. They are eager to contract with a rising star mixed-media artist and you are already successful regionally. They are very interested in getting you under contact and to start showing your pieces. They have shared a contract with you that has several issues addressed including, but not limited to the number of art pieces you will provide them per year, national and European rights, and their commission amount.

Use the above artist and gallery scenario. The gallery owners are very insistent on having European rights. However, the artist's plan is to not include this issue in the contract to allow them to work with a European gallery if necessary. Using a rights-based approach, how would you respond to the gallery's request for European rights? Are there any risks in taking this rights-based approach? If so, share an example of one risk.
