The Case
Restaurant Brand Internationals (RBI) main objectives were to expand its international reach, develop efficient franchise partnerships, and produce cost efficiencies among its subsidiaries. The company planned to continue competing in the red ocean of fast food in developed countries, as well as expand its three brands in the more untapped developing world to become a dominant player there. One of RBIs greatest strengths was its ability to leverage its large franchise networks to benefit from economies of scale at its corporate owned locations, as together the franchise network and the corporate company had a greater impact on purchasing and sales decisions than the corporate locations would have had alone. In addition, having a large franchise network allowed the company to expand into new territories while minimizing its financial risk since part of the investment was the responsibility of the franchisee. As a result, RBI could expand faster than if it had to bankroll all of its expansion on its own. A core competency of was its skill at consolidation and cost cutting, which led directly to the original merger between Burger King Worldwide and Tim Hortons Inc., and the continued success of RBI. RBI also kept costs down from the accrued tax benefits of locating its headquarters outside the US in Canada.
