You are required to design the SCADA system for a coffee production plant. A simplified process flow diagram is shown in the figure on the next page.

For this process the requirements are as follows:

Water reserve tank (T001): Level is monitored

Water batch tank (T002): Level and temperature are monitored

Milk batch tank (T003): Level and temperature are monitored

Sugar bin (T004): Level is monitored. Sugar is in solid form.

Coffee bin (T005): Level is monitored. Coffee is in solid form.

Diesel storage tank (T006): Level, temperature, and pressure are monitored

Steam drum (T007): Level, temperature, and pressure are monitored

Pasteurizer/mixer: Temperature, level, and motor status (On/Off) are monitored

Bottling storage tank (T010): Level and temperature are monitored

On all lines 1-10 suitable flowmeters are installed, and the flow of solids or fluids is monitored.

All valves can be controlled in manual and/or auto manner.

The Pasteurizer/mixer motor could be turned on/off in manual and/or auto manner.

The operator should be able to shutoff the boiler and the whole process.

The hot water/steam supply valve (V008) is manipulated by a temperature controller receiving the temperature of the liquid in the pasteurizer/mixer. The operator should be able to modify the setpoint of the controller.

Question 1: (5 marks)

Would you use a SCADA/PLC or a DCS system for this project? Justify your choice.

Question 2: (10 marks)

Evaluate the data communication needs including the network architecture, the protocols, and the required equipment. Justify the choice and provide a diagram showing the networking architecture.

Question 3: (35 marks)

Use FactoryTalk View Studio to create the main HMI screen. When creating the HMI screen connect at least one object to an existing tag to test the data exchange. You can use systems tags such as seconds to get a variable that constantly changes (this could be useful to simulate a filling tank for example).
