You are required to design the system of compressors and intercooler for air flowing at 2 8 moles / second and operating for one month.

You are required to design the system of compressors and intercooler for air flowing at 28 moles/second and operating for one month.
The design include calculating the following:
Individual and total compressor work
Sketch of the system (including location of the intercooler)
Intercooler design including:
Number of tubes,
Tube length,
Total heat transfer area,
Shell size (decide first on shell type)
Deciding of utility and total quantity of the utility used
Costing of the system:
Total CAPEX
Total OPEX
Data are on the following pages
Regulations
This is an individual work.
The design needs to be submitted as a pdf.
Deadline for submission is Friday 12/01/2024 at 12pm.
Late submission is not acceptable.
Air compression
A centrifugal compressor is to be used to compress the air that is supplied to the reactor. Operation is assumed to be adiabatic and irreversible. The work required to compress a mole of gas isentropically from P1 to P2 is given by
W=RTs-1[(P2P1)-1-1]
where Ts is the inlet temperature (K) and
=CpCv=11-RCp=1.4 for air.
The actual work is given by
Wact=W
where is the isentropic efficiency of the compressor. A value of 0.82 for can be assumed. Note that the outlet (discharge) temperature TD will be given by
Wact=Cp[TD-TS]
The discharge temperature from any compression stage should not exceed 170C. A four stage compressor will be required with at least one intercooler.
A preliminary sizing of the intercoolers will be necessary. An overall heat transfer coefficient of 0.15kWm2(K) can be used for this calculation.
