Part 1:


  1. Using the aircraft you selected (C-5 Galaxy Aircraft) in the Introduction Discussion forum, find a picture of the aircraft. Label the major parts of the aircraft including the control surfaces.
  2. Using the same aircraft, find the typical cruise altitude, typical cruise speed, and typical takeoff weight. Provide the cruise altitude in ft and m. Provide the cruise speed in ft/s, m/s, km/hr, miles/hr, and kt. Provide the takeoff weight in lb and N. Find the mass of the aircraft in slugs and kg. Show your work for the conversions. Use the weight equation to go between weight and mass.
  3. At the typical cruise altitude of your aircraft, use the standard atmosphere tables in the appendices to find the standard temperature, pressure, and density in both SI and BGS units.
  4. If the temperature were to increase by 30 K with the pressure staying the same. Calculate the new air density in SI units. What is the specific volume?
  5. Calculate the weight of the air contained in a box that is 1 m long, 6 m wide, and 2 m tall having a density from question 4.

Part 2:


In Excel, create the standard atmosphere table in SI units from 0 to 20,000 m using an interval of 50 m. You are creating the standard atmosphere using the equations from the lecture and textbook. Your table will include geometric altitude, geopotential altitude, temperature, pressure, and density. Use a lapse rate of for the gradient layer from 0 to 11,000 m in geopotential altitude.

Make sure your Excel sheet is labeled clearly so the instructor can understand what you did.

Include in your Excel file three plots:

  1. Temperature vs altitude
  2. Pressure vs altitude
  3. Density vs altitude

Make sure to label each axis and include the units. The title of each plots must include your name.
