Fiat car with a gross weight of 14 kN has a weight transfer ratio of 62:38 front to rear during braking. The vehicle is provided with internal expanding shoe brake with two leading shoes in the front wheels. The tyre diameter is 550 mm and the coefficient of road adhesion is 0.85 and rolling resistance is 0.015. The cast iron drum is 200 mm in diameter and 65 mm wide, 10 mm thickness and has a mass of 7kg. The asbestos lining provided with 55 mm wide and 8 mm thick bonded to the shoe by adhesive. Each of these liners subtends an angle of 102\deg at the centre of the drum. If the vehicle is braked to rest in 15 seconds from a cruising speed of 100 kmph, determine the peak and the bulk temperatures attained by the front wheel drums. If the vehicle is braked repeatedly from 80 to 40 kmph with an interval of 3 minutes between successive braking, determine the equilibrium temperature attained by the front wheel drum and the life of the brake liner as well.
