You are selling insurance. It's the last day of the year, Dec 31st. Production ends. Your customer told you yesterday he wants to purchase a policy from you.

Huge bonuses are on the line for you, your boss, and his boss. On your way out the door as you go to pick up your last sale, your boss tells you that another rep just fell short of his quota., It' now up to you to hit the quota for the entire region. If you make this last $3,000 sale, it is now worth a $12,000 bonus to you and a $20,000 bonus to your boss. For you, that $3,000 sale also means you win a trip to Hawaii for you and your significant other, and a , plus a $500 commission. Your spouse really wants to go to Hawaii, as your 5th anniversary is coming up. It would make a great second honeymoon.

When you get there, the customer informs you that something came up and he just can't afford it right now, but he would be able to go ahead with it in February. Please note, it is against the law to rebate insurance premiums to clients. What would you do given the following scenarios?

Given each of the following scenarios, be honest. What might someone consider doing? What would you do? How hard would it be to do the right thing?

Scenario 1: You have been in good standing with the company and have earned the last four annual bonuses and trips. You know that if you win this trip and bonus you will be in line for a promotion.

Scenario 2: You have been struggling the past four years since you started, and this is the first bonus you could earn and trip that you could win. Your boss has alluded to the fact that he can't keep someone around forever who never wins a trip or earns a bonus. You know your job is on the line.

Scenario 3: You are a brand new rep. This is your first complete year selling. If you win this trip and earn this bonus you know you will be seen as a hero in the eyes of your boss. He did a lot to help you get off to a good start. A lot more than other managers do for their reps. You feel like you owe a little bit, although he would never purposely make you feel that way.
