You are teaching a Certificate III in Business and have a class of learners, mainly in the 18-25-year age bracket. All are working in an office or business environment as trainees. An elective unit requires them to organise meetings. This includes producing written documents such as the agenda and minutes. For their assessment, students need to organise a meeting in their workplace. They will need to submit the agenda and minutes to you. Suitability testing prior to training showed that all learners can write adequately for everyday purposes, however, they still have gaps in relation to the training. The daily writing is familiar texts such as social media, notes, and sending short emails and text messages. Their writing is grammatically correct, and they can complete sentences and paragraphs on familiar topics, although these contain many spelling errors. Their vocabulary is informal, and they use many colloquial phrases and slang which you don't feel are suitable in a business context.
- Outline the learners' needs (gaps) in writing
- How can you support these learners to get through the assessment?
