You are the administrator (manager) at a major hospital and manage a team of top physicians. One of the physicians comes to you and needs a decision from you. She needs to know whether to allow a very sick patient into a program to test new drugs. The patient is likely to die in weeks if not treated, and no known drugs have been effective. The new drug may help the patient and possibly save his life, but no one is sure whether the drug will help or not (hence the need for clinical trials on humans). The drug manufacturer is not keen to allow this patient into the clinical trials because if the patient dies during the trials then the government approval for the drug for later commercialization (large scale production) will highly likely be denied. If that happens, the manufacturer will not work with the hospital again in future trials. Describe your decision and explain how you came to the decision.
The answer should contain the following elements :
- Your decision in summary form as clearly and succinctly as possible
- Describe the relevant ethical principles that apply to the situation
- Describe the relevant facts and how the ethical principles should be applied
- Your reasoning in more detail that led to your decision
