You are the assigned counselor for a new 16-year-old client named Maria at your treatment facility for teenage girls. She previously attended a different treatment program last year for abusing prescription medications and drinking. Although she completed that program, her mother put her into treatment again after she recently took the family car without asking, got drunk, and on her way home ran the car into a ditch after losing control. Maria was wearing a seat belt and not seriously hurt. She walked home and was not arrested. Her mother paid to have the car towed and then told Maria she could either go to treatment or she was calling the police. Maria chose treatment.

Maria's a single child who lives with her mother. She tells you that she "parties" with her school classmates, mostly on the weekends, and sometimes uses by herself during the week. She identifies Oxycontin as her drug of choice, but says she will use heroin and likes to drink. Her parents are divorced. Her father is in and out of her life between multiple prison sentences for drug crimes. She last saw her father a month ago for lunch and shrugs, saying "I don't know" when you ask her if she is close to her father. She then tells you that he is three years behind on child support payments to her mother and lost his license because of it. When you ask her about her relationship with her mother, Maria refers to her as "stupid" and "weak" and says they are "not close."

She also tells you that she previously tried to commit suicide six months ago by swallowing 10-15 aspirin and drinking tequila. She ended up vomiting repeatedly and her mother sat with her through the night, giving her water. Her mother did not take her to the hospital. Maria tells you that she still feels depressed sometimes. When you ask her about her social and dating life, Maria tells you that she doesn't have many close friends, but last year she started dating and having sex with a 25-year-old who was her gym teacher during her freshman year of high school (she is a sophomore now). The gym teacher no longer works at the school and her mother does not know about the relationship.

Your facility's policy is to meet with the parents and the teenage clients as part of the assessment. When you meet with Maria and her mother, Maria is angry and dismissive toward her mother, swearing at her openly and saying, "you are f.... stupid" when her mother says that she thinks Maria "might have a drinking problem." The mother just looks down and smiles nervously at you.
