You are the county environmental manager for Union County and you have a problem with a pond located in Warinanco Park in Roselle, NJ. There are several signs of Eutrophia in the pond. The Pond has a surface area of 15,000 m2 and an average depth of 1.5 meters. The average flow of water into the pond is 10 m3/min and the average Phosphorus load from the contributing watershed is 0.5 kg/day. The solid P / dissolved P ratio (\alpha ) is 0.6 and the average settling velocity for particles in this pond is 0.5 m/day. A brand new dissolved Phosphorus treatment is brought to your attention. It is a chemical sequestration product that can absorb dissolved Phosphorus so that for each gram of absorbent can sequester 1 gram of Phosphorus (essentially eliminating it from the system). How much absorbent should I dose this pond with each day (grams/day) to achieve a steady state, Mesotrophic pond (use a final concentration of 18 ug/L of total Phosphorus in the pond). Note: Absorption is a zero order process and settling still occurs. (Hint: you need to adjust the mass balance for this nutrient problem, start with the mass balance presented in class in the nutrient modeling Lecture 10 on the canvas site.)
