You are to develop a human resources portfolio for a company that you create. The portfolio content is based on the chapters covered in class. Creativity is welcomed, and you will be marked according to the rubrics for this project.

This portfolio can be part of the package you would present to a prospective employer. Organize your portfolio in a manner that you would to a company CEO or to a HR manager who you want to impress. The portfolio is evidence that you can produce high quality professional work and can therefore be a useful employability tool.

You may work on this portfolio either individually or in a group of no more than three students.

Upon completion, the portfolio should be uploaded to your instructor in one Word or PDF document to be graded.

You will also need to deliver a 5-10 minute per student (depending on class size) presentation summarizing your portfolio. The presentations will take place on the final day of HR113. The presentation will be graded on timing, content, visual aid quality, and delivery. If using PowerPoint, create no more than one slide for each numbered point below.

  1. Choose the type of company you would like to work for. You are the Human Resources Manager and will develop policies and procedures for this company. Choose a company name and develop a mission statement. Design a company logo.
  1. You will have to decide how many positions (have at least 3) you will have in your company and describe the method of job analysis. Then, determine the specifications and requirements for each position and write job descriptions for all positions. You may want to include a chart demonstrating the chain of command. Refer to Chapter 4.
  1. Determine the recruitment process for your company and describe the methods of recruitment inside and outside your organization. Describe the steps in the recruitment process including the requirements. How will you attract employees to your workplace? Refer to Chapter 6.
  1. Describe the steps of your selection process. What types of testing will be used? Will references be checked? What questions will you ask the reference? Develop a list of interview questions that will be asked of each prospective employee as well as a list of specific questions relating to each position available. How many interviews will there be? Who will be present at the interviews? Who makes the final hiring decision? Refer to Chapter 7.
  1. Your company will have to provide orientation and training. What is your orientation program? Develop a check list to be used during the orientation process. What type of training does your company provide? Refer to Chapter 8.
  1. Determine what type / types of performance appraisals you will have for your company. Develop performance appraisal procedures. Which staff members appraise? Who is included in the process of appraising an employee? When and how often are appraisals done? Is there a raise that goes along with appraisals? How is your appraisal system evaluated?  How are appraisal interviews conducted? Refer to Chapter 10.
  1. Is there a set pay structure for your company? How are your pay rates determined? When do the employees get raises, and how much would their raise be? Include any incentive plans that your company may have (eg. bonuses, commission). Refer to Chapter 11.
  1. Develop a flexible benefits package for your employees. Develop policies and procedures for benefits referring to full time / part time employees / casual (on-call) employees, vacation time, sick time, leaves of absence, healthcare, and dental. Your benefits package could also include short term / long term disability, life insurance, retirement packages, and employee services. Make the benefits package attractive for future employees. Refer to Chapter 13.
  1. Occupational Health and Safety are extremely important policies to have. Develop some policies (at least 10) that are relevant to your workplace. Ensure that your policies reflect the hazards that are common in your company’s industry. Include any safety training (eg. WHMIS, First Aid) that employees would need to take before or during their employment. Refer to Chapter 14.
  1. Develop at least five clear workplace rules (non-safety related) that will be enforced in your company. Explain your system of progressive discipline if these workplace rules are not followed. Also explain how an employee can appeal a decision or at least bring a work-related problem to management’s attention. Explain how your system is not only legal, but also fair from the employee’s point of view. Refer to Chapter 2, 8 and 15.
