You currently serve as the infrastructure manager for your company. Your CIO and executive leadership team have approved the migration of your on-premises resources to Azure. Your on-premises environment consists of VMs that operate as application servers, web front-end servers, SQL database servers, and other supporting services (domain controllers, DNS, email, etc.). Your CIO has asked for a recommendation on the move and some of the areas for consideration when undertaking a migration of this size. The company's leadership team has asked to minimize costs where possible. However, because this is the company's first cloud deployment, they also want to ensure that performance, availability, and security of the company's infrastructure is not compromised as part of this migration. They expect all to be as good or better than what they have today.
While consulting with your team, you determine that the following need to be addressed as part of the migration planning:
- Sizing of VMs when moved to Azure.
- Defined storage types - unmanaged or managed - and encryption for VMs in Azure.
- Whether or not to deploy your standard image(s) or use configuration management in Azure.
- Network topology and rule sets (i.e. Network Security Groups and/or firewalls) for which the VMs are deployed to.
- Monitoring of the health for VMs deployed to Azure.
